The Nadal Award was originally given to a member of the Erickson Football League, but eligibility was expanded to other sports after the establishment of the Founders League. It is awarded on an annual basis, as warranted, to a coach whose conduct exemplifies the proclamation “play by the rules, accept victory or defeat graciously, respect all who assemble and participate.” It may be awarded in recognition of sportsmanship during a particular contest, throughout a season, or for continued contributions to athletics and the League.
The 2025 Nadal Award was presented to Fran O’Donoghue in recognition of her unwavering commitment to educational excellence, sportsmanship, and outstanding competition. For over four decades, O’Donoghue has been a cornerstone of Choate athletics, coaching the Girls’ Varsity Lacrosse, Girls’ Varsity Field Hockey, and Girls’ Cross Country teams; founding the Girls’ J.V. Ice Hockey team; and overseeing the winter and spring running programs. Moreover, she has brought the same passion and enthusiasm to the classroom as she has to the field, and her impact as a physics teacher has been just as profound. Whether mentoring young scientists or inspiring student-athletes to push their limits, O’Donoghue has spent her career fostering a culture of learning, growth, and excellence at Choate.
The Archibald A. Smith III Award was established in 2015 to honor Arch Smith, long-time Headmaster of Trinity-Pawling School and devoted member of the Founders League, upon his retirement. Smith began his career at Trinity-Pawling in 1975 as a teacher of chemistry and physics. During his transformative 40-year tenure, he went on to serve as Director of College Placement, Assistant Headmaster, and ultimately, Headmaster from 1990-2015. The Smith Award is given out on an annual basis, as warranted, to a coach for lifetime achievement and commitment to the Founders League ideals of educational excellence, sportsmanship, and outstanding competition.
The 2025 Smith Award was presented to Brian Foster in recognition of his his 38 years of service to Trinity-Pawling and the Founders League. During his tenure at Trinity-Pawling, Foster served as the Varsity Boys’ Hockey Coach, and subsequently, Athletic Director. While his impact at Trinity-Pawling extends far beyond athletics, his commitment to sportsmanship and to the role of athletics as an integral component of a holistic approach to education has been instrumental in the life Trinity-Pawling School and also to the vitality and relevance of the Founders League.
